There are millions of diets out there and you’ve field-tested more than your fair share -- to no avail. Discouraged and downtrodden, you even tried the “magic diet pills,” but they only left you shaky and irritable.
Feeling defeated and demoralized, you resign yourself to a life of being overweight. But you don’t have to anymore. It’s not your fault you failed; you were attacking the consequence (being overweight), instead of the cause (disordered appetite), according to therapist and best-selling author Anne Katherine.
In her new book, "How to Make Almost Any Diet Work: Repair Your Disordered Appetite and Lose Weight," Anne explains that excess weight is a symptom, not a cause and that to adhere to a healthier lifestyle you must cure the cause -- and the symptoms will follow suit.
Anne has been a therapist for 36 years and specializing in food addiction and binge eating since 1986, as well as being a recovering food addict herself. She’s walked the walk and been where you are.
“This book is for anyone who eats too much. That includes most Americans,” is the first line of the book. The numbers are staggering: Two-thirds of Americans are overweight or obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Why Hire A Fitness Trainer?Do you really need to hire a fitness trainer? One of the biggest obstacles to staying on track to getting and ..... The reasons for this weighty epidemic are that, “people don’t understand appetite disorder and partly because people select the wrong diet," Anne said. "Appetite drives eating and if they can’t control appetite, then the diet won’t be effective. You have to change your lifestyle so you can adhere to a diet.”

Anne compares food addiction to drug and alcohol addiction, but contends that food addiction is more complicated because you can give up alcohol, cocaine or heroin and continue living, but you cannot stop eating and survive.
“For a food addict, eating is not mainly about the flavor. Eating is about the fix,” Anne says. The same neurochemicals that cause drug addiction cause food addiction, she said.
There are seven appetite disorders, and Anne suggests gradual change to diagnose the disorder and find the specific solution to your specific eating disorder. After you know what your exact problem is, you can customize a diet that you can adhere to and make a lifestyle change instead of a failed diet attempt.
“'How to Make Almost Any Diet Work' is the companion book, even the instruction manual, for any diet you want to try,” Anne says. She recommends reading it before you try another diet to better identify an eating program that will work for your specific needs.
“Once you understand the degree to which your eating is chemically driven way beyond your conscious control, you’ll start to see that overeating is not your fault,” Anne says.
In her book, Anne asserts she’ll give the reader what they need to make a pivotal change in their life such as: “the skill training, the information, the step-by-step changes and the new relationship you’ll develop with your own fine self.”
She outlines a very detailed, 29-step process to overcome your dinnertime demons. If 29 steps sounds exhaustive, ask yourself this: Is it more taxing than carrying around an extra 20, 30 or even 100 pounds? Is it more grueling than constantly trying new diets and failing?
To give you an idea of what’s in store for you on your way to enlightenment, here are the first seven steps from the book:
# Step 1. Learn your body’s language. # Step 2. Make a commitment to yourself. # Step 3. Make your first eating change and start following a map. # Step 4. Prepare to have the comfort you need. # Step 5. Begin Eating Change 2: Eat snacks that are 50/50. # Step 6. Understand the chemistry of comfort. # Step 7. Improve your satiety through serotonin.
"How to Make Almost Any Diet Work" gives readers the knowledge and tools to stop dieting and failing and start eating healthy and living confidently. Stop the shame and torment about your eating habits because, as Anne notes, “You deserve to eat without feeling guilty about it.” You just need to know how to do it.
