"Instant Willpower!"
Wow! That is a catchy title, isn’t it?! It coerced me into buying the latest issue of a women’s magazine while standing in line at the grocery store -- I admit it intrigued me.
I got the magazine home and poured through it looking for the “Instant” willpower secrets that it offered. Let’s delve into the article, shall we…?
Here’s the subtitle:
“Always hungry? Can’t lose weight? Discover the cheap, effective 30-second strategy that allows you to eat whatever you want and still lose 7 pounds a week!”
I didn’t write that! I wouldn’t be allowed to, I assure you that my editor would say “we can’t print a pack of lies like that!” And if we did, the FDA would surely breath down our neck looking for the false advertising and inaccuracies of our printed material, but there it was in black and white in a national magazine!
Before I even read the article, I was skeptical and thought “NO WAY!” Well, here’s the gist of the article -- you swallow one tablespoon of OIL twice a day. WHAT?
The rules: Refined walnut oil and light olive oil are best, and you can’t eat anything or have any calories ONE hour BEFORE and AFTER the oil, so that means for four hours out of your day, you aren’t eating anything. OK, that might be ONE way that it works, you AREN’T eating during four waking hours! For a lot of people, that alone will shave off some calories.
That certainly can’t be all there is to it? Seven pounds off in a week by only sipping OIL? Seven of the magazine’s readers tested the strategy and they lost “as much as 7 pounds in seven days” (that means maybe ONE person did, what was the average weight loss, who lost no weight?)
The strategy is from Seth Roberts, author of “The Shangri-La Diet” who earned his doctorate degree from University of California-Berkeley. Here is what HE says about the diet:
Why isn't this a fad diet? I am often asked. I say because it is based on lots of science. Not the perfect answer because scientists are not immune to fads. What I am trying to say is that it is based on a better understanding of how our weight-control system works than previous popular diets. My scientific work on this had two parts: I came up with a new theory of weight control; and I used self-experimentation to test my theory (a fancy way of saying self-experimentation led me to believe my theory) and apply it. My theory was heavily based on the experiments and concepts of others, some of which are listed below. The Shangri-La Diet has a chapter about the theory ("A New Theory of Weight Control"), a chapter about the self-experimentation ("The Case of the Missing Appetite"), and an appendix about other scientists' work ("The Science Behind the Theory Behind the Diet").

Not being one to buy into something just because an article says it is going to work and being one who gets VERY skeptical when the title tells me I can “eat whatever I want and still lose 7 pounds a week” -- I had to give it a try.
Well, my self experimentation was not a pretty thing. I used light olive oil and wanted to throw up every time that I had to suck back a swig of it -- the taste and texture of the olive oil just wouldn’t go away and I wanted to eat to get rid of the taste. I waited the required hour before and after before consuming any other calories but by the time the second hour was up, I was ravenous, and since the “diet” said I could have “whatever” I wanted, I did! I ate cookies, I had some pizza, I ate a doughnut for goodness sake -- I haven’t had one of those in years, but since I “could”, I did, since I wanted it!
Long story short, I gained 3 pounds on this diet and my family hated being around me because they claim that I had gas. (To be fair, the FAQs of the diet do say that some people feel a difference within hours and some it takes up to three weeks -- I wasn’t willing to risk two more weeks and potentially another 6 pounds of weight gain for the sake of this FAD diet!)
Thankfully, I went back to good old healthy nutritional eating and exercise and drinking water and the 3 pounds are now just a bad memory of self-experimentation.
Here’s the bottom line on this edition of Magazine Madness, if it sounds too good to be true, if the promises seem like a dream come true -- it probably isn’t going to deliver. This diet delivered exactly what its name implies: Shangri-la (n.) -- An imaginary remote paradise on earth; utopia. A distant and secluded hideaway, usually of great beauty and peacefulness.
Real weight loss and lasting results are only realized through real change and over a period of time. You can not eat “whatever” you want and lose weight if those things you want are fattening, unhealthy and calorie dense. And why should we eat something just because we “want” it if it is unhealthy!? Makes us sound like spoiled little kids saying “I want it,” and as a parent I assure you we need to teach our kids there is a difference between what we “want” and what we “need.”
When it comes to nutrition and the consumption of food, we simply need to get back to the basics and eat what we “need” -- there is a huge difference.
I wish we could lose 7 pounds in a week, but that can only happen in Shangri-La!
